In last two years Indian Cinema given you few Movies which talk about the problems which subject to Taboo in Indian Culture. Movies like Toilet-Ek Prem Katha,Halkaa,Phullu, Padman, Mere Pyare Prime Minister is none other than next link of these category. These movies talks about women health safety during their monthly cycles, also for a huge chunk of people in India still dont have a Toilet.
Sargam a single mother, played by Anjali Patil lives in Slums of Mumbai along with her son Kanhayya (Kannu). As we have seen in many movies same plot showcasing of Mumbai Slums with lack of fundamental things like Toilets,Clean water supply, electricity etc. This movie also focused on same issues.
One night Sargam got sexually violated while returning from a place where all ladies from slum use to go for Toilet in open space.Which turns around the world of Kannu, and he start taking initiative to have a Toilet for her mother and thereafter as name suggest story is all about, how kannu face issues to fulfill his need of fundamental rights, how he approach system etc etc.
Apart from necessity of Toilet, Movie is also focused on strong bonding between mother and his son. Many scenes are shot between them which are actually delightful and admirable.
Anjali Patil is becoming a Strong Actress steadily. After Chakraview, Newton, Meri Nimmo, this is one of her solid performance, which will reminds you of Smita Patil.
Om Kanojia delivered his best performance in character of Kannu. He is innocent, emotional and sensitive which demanded by the Character by Kannu. Characters played for Kannus friend are also noticeable, they are sharp, funny and quick-witted, named as Nirala, Ringtone and Mangala.
Movie is written and directed by Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra well known for Rang-De-Basanti,invested his time to shoot in actual locations to make this movie as real as possible.Movie is shot in real slum of Ghatkopar in Mumbai. He is focused to to capture small detailing of reality like small and tiny houses made by Tin and plastic and small gullies passing through sever lines. The real situation of a slums of which Indian Upper and middle class feels discomfort to talk about can be seen on the screen with honesty. Airplane flying above slums represent two different world in single frame giving face to the irony, good cinematographic work done in such scenes.
However, a film with very noble intentions seems to be weak at writing department, writer doesn't feel important to tell audience why Sargam is single and what is she do for a living over the choreographed danced on holi. The conclusion of the film come too hurriedly, too fast that writer seems not to know, what to do in climax which leads to unnecessary incident in a attempt to make really tears roll but it is so abrupt and disconnected from rest of the film that it falls flat.
